Weekend and Early Week Weather Outlook Across the CONUS… Sidney Sperry 07 Jan 2022 12:12 UTC
Good Friday morning to all, and special plaudits to all Line Crews and personnel who have responded to the call for Mutual Aid in the states of Kentucky and Virginia, following a week’s worth of heavy snow and high winds. May God watch over them and protect them as they endeavor to restore power - and comfort - to thousands of Co-op member-consumers in those states.

To summarize the next 72-hours weather across the Continental U.S. (CONUS): More snow in the higher elevation areas of the WA & OR Cascades, the Tetons of WY, and the Northern & Southern Rockies from ID & MT to CO. There is snow extending this morning from WV and northern VA northeastward into the New England states. All forms of travel in the Northeast Region will be extremely difficult over the next 24 hours as this winter storm system finally moves out of the region tomorrow. In the center of the country, Arctic air is bringing dangerous Wind Chills from ND & SD to MN, WI, IA and IL, and much colder air to snow-packed areas of TN, KY, WV and VA.

The next storm system to impact the Tennessee Valley Region will actually begin in southeast TX with a Marginal Risk of Severe Thunderstorms on Saturday evening. Rain will gradually spread northeastward into AR, LA, MS, TN and KY over the weekend and into Monday morning. From 1” up to 2.5” of rainfall is forecast for some areas.

While temperatures gradually warm up in the U.S. mid-section and Southeast Region on Saturday and Sunday, another Arctic air mass will drop southward beginning Sunday night into Monday, bringing with it the possibility of some light freezing rain to parts of AR, MO, IA, WI, IL, IN, MI, TN, VA, MD, PA & into New England states by early next week. No major ice accumulation amounts are being forecast at this time for the 72-hr. period.

Lastly, as drier and warmer air moves back into the Southern Plains, an ELEVATED Fire Risk returns for parts of eastern NM and western TX tomorrow (Saturday).
