FYI…
Nicholas made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane early this morning near the Matagorda Peninsula in TX, with sustained winds of 75 mph and gusts recorded up to 95 mph. It is now a Tropical Storm, but dumping huge amounts of rainfall in southeastern TX, with more heavy rain and severe thunderstorms expected for southern, central and southeastern LA over the next 2 to 3 days. Rainfall amounts in LA could range from 8” to 12” in southwestern LA to 6” to 10” in central and southeastern LA, southern MS, and parts of far southern AL. Severe thunderstorms today across southern LA could produce some tornadoes. Due to the heavy rainfall being forecast, there will be major concerns for flooding and flash flooding today and tomorrow across the southern half of LA.
We continue to closely watch a developing disturbance now located just north of the Bahama Islands. NHC forecasters are giving it a 60% chance of developing into a Tropical Depression within the next 5 days. If it does develop, it could cause some impacts to the coastal areas of both North Carolina and South Carolina. We will continue to watch this disturbance closely. - Sid Sperry
