4:00AM NHC Update on Hurricane Delta... Sid Sperry 07 Oct 2020 10:03 UTC
Hurricane Delta is just off the southeastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula as of 4:00am EDT this morning, and will be making landfall there in just a few hours. It’s intensity has decreased slightly, from 144 mph sustained winds late yesterday afternoon to now 115 mph sustained winds. It will impact the Yucatán Peninsula as a Category 3 Hurricane before entering the Gulf of Mexico later today, where it is forecast to re-intensify before making landfall in south-central Louisiana. The track has shifted very slightly to the east this morning, but the “Cone of Uncertainty” is narrowing down now, basically from the TX-LA border to New Orleans. Louisiana communities that should be preparing for a Major Hurricane with landfall Sustained winds potentially exceeding 110 mph with gusts to 125 mph are Lake Arthur, Gueydan, Kaplan, Abbeville, Erath, New Iberia and Jeanerette. Other cities potentially impacted could be Lafayette, Henderson, Baton Rouge, and Morgan City. Storm surge, heavy rainfall, and flooding/flash flooding along with high winds will be primary concerns. - Sid Sperry, OAEC
