Latest NHC and NWS Forecast Updates on Tropical Storm “Beta”... Sid Sperry 20 Sep 2020 02:00 UTC

The 8pm update from the NHC is forecasting that Tropical Storm “Beta” will not quite reach Category 1 hurricane status when it makes landfall near Matagorda Bay, TX, late Monday night or sometime early Tuesday morning. Max sustained winds at landfall are forecast to be in the 65-70 mph range. The NHC has also downgraded winds in the Houston, TX, area on Wednesday afternoon into the 40 mph range, down from 50-55 mph. As a Tropical Depression in western LA, forecast sustained winds are now in the 25-30 mph range, also down a bit from the NHC’s 4pm forecast.

Heavy rainfall and storm surge are still the primary concerns. See graphical forecasts below from the National Weather Service. Also included are the NWS sustained wind speeds in 6-hour increments through 7pm Tuesday. - Sid Sperry
